The Ministry of Manpower, represented by the Directorate General for Labour Welfare, arrested 74 single workers from Muscat governorate. The arrested also included, absconding, retrenched workers and infiltrators.
The arrests were made during an inspection campaign carried out on a rented house in Azaiba last week. Salim bin Saeed al Badi, director general of Labour Welfare, said that this inspection campaign was conducted based on several complaints by citizens and residents in the area. Badi added that the ministry has a special team that looks after such complaints.
The ministry has held similar inspections earlier as well in areas such as Seeb, Bausher, Muttrah, Amerat and Quriyat and arrested 524 violators. Highlighting the issue of single workers living in residential areas, Badi said that the ministry seeks to stop the practice.
“This practice of housing single workers in residential areas goes against Omani culture. The carefree lifestyle of these workers could cause nuisance to those living with families.”
