Big Changes in Oman: New Laws Safeguard Domestic Worker Rights

The Ministry of Labour in Oman has announced a major new regulation aimed at protecting domestic workers and improving the way their work is governed. This comes in the form of Ministerial Decision No. 574/2025, which introduces clear rules and guidelines for domestic workers and related jobs. The decision is designed to make sure that domestic workers have their rights protected while also providing a framework that employers must follow.

Under this new regulation, both domestic workers and their employers are given clear responsibilities. It sets out standards for contracts, working hours, rest periods, and other conditions to ensure fair treatment. Employers are now required to provide proper contracts that clearly explain the duties, salary, and other terms of employment. This helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures that domestic workers know their rights from the start.

The regulation also focuses on protecting workers from abuse and exploitation. It outlines the procedures for handling complaints and provides a legal mechanism for domestic workers to report any violations safely. This is an important step toward creating a safer working environment and giving workers confidence that their concerns will be taken seriously.

Additionally, the decision includes rules about recruitment agencies and how they operate. Recruitment agencies must follow strict guidelines to ensure that domestic workers are recruited fairly and legally. They are also responsible for providing accurate information about the job, the employer, and the terms of employment. This prevents workers from being misled or forced into unfavorable conditions.

Ministerial Decision No. 574/2025 also emphasizes training and awareness. Employers are encouraged to understand their responsibilities and the rights of the domestic workers they hire. Workers are also given guidance on their own rights and how to seek help if needed. This helps create a more respectful and transparent work environment for everyone.

Overall, this new regulation represents a significant step forward in protecting domestic workers in Oman. It provides clear rules for employment, promotes fair treatment, and ensures that domestic workers have access to support and legal protection. Both employers and workers benefit from the clarity and structure it offers. By implementing these rules, Oman is taking an important step toward improving the welfare and rights of domestic workers while fostering a safer and more organized working environment.
